Chapter Thirty: 6 months and trying baby food!
8:37 PMI can not believe it! My son is 6 months old and yes I'm one of those moms who tear up at the thought of another 6 months rolling by and my baby turning into a one year old. Seriously, I knew time flew by before I had a child but now that I am watching him experience life for the first time, it's depressing how fast time goes by.
I think the most exciting thing about being a new mother is witnessing my child's firsts. His first night home. His first bath. His first burp. His first smile. His first laugh. His first moment rolling over. I mean.... I can go on and on but I know you can guess what other first babies have. Ugh I just want to tell him to slow down.
Kambryn turned 6 months on March 7th but I wanted to wait until our experience with a few foods and his check up before I wrote his update.
Trying New Food
On the 7th my husband and I decided to start my son on foods. I chose to feed him sweet potatoes because I was recommended to start him with a yellow vegetable (and sweet potatoes are considered yellow. Crazy right?). I waited until it was Lunch time (around 2 in the afternoon) and allowed my husband the honors of feeding Kambryn his very first bites of baby food.
Once that spoon full of sweet potatoes entered into his mouth, he made this scrunched up face that was hilarious! I felt bad for laughing but I just could not help myself. Other than that, he loved the taste. We fed him about 3-4 spoonfuls and stopped.
The schedule I have for him was recommended to me. I asked many mothers what they chose to do and did tons of research but found out that every mother tried something different with their children and I was told so many different tips and tricks. Every mother is different and that is perfectly ok. My tip to other moms is to just go with your heart and what you think is best for your child.
I have been feeding Kambryn oatmeal cereal (as seen in the photo below) for breakfast (around 10:00 am) and then again for dinner (around 7:00pm).
I only feed him baby food for lunch. I chose to do this because I was trying to avoid the chance of him having a stomach ache before bedtime. Lunch is a safe time and that way if he were to get grumpy, I have time to give him medicine or whatever he needs to feel better.
Also I decided to try one new food per week. The first week I tried Sweet Potatoes, like I stated before. I had no issues with it. Kambryn enjoyed the taste and texture. He had no gas. His poop seemed to be the same. And he had no allergies.
The second week I tried Green Beans. Still no issues except Kambryn did not like them. I practically had to force it into his mouth lol. Third week I tried Bananas and I have started to noticed his poop becoming a little thicker. So far bananas have been his favorite.
You don't have to go a whole week in between feedings. The recommendation is 3-4 days in between because of allergies. Like I mentioned before, you choose what you feel is best. I am thinking about starting a new food every 4-5 days because Kambryn is finishing his food within that time frame.
I chose to try the Gerber brand but I have been thinking and researching on trying to make his baby food myself. I know it requires dedication, time, and hard work but it would be worth it in the long run. I plan to write a blog post about it with recipes once I try this so be on the look out.
As shown in the photo above, this is the amount of cereal I have been giving Kambryn. It is about 2-3 spoonfuls of the oatmeal cereal. I then mix it with my breastmilk, about 1/2 of an ounces or until the consistency is how I like it.
I give Kambryn about the same amount of baby food. So far he has done amazing and I couldn't be more proud of him. Not to mention how much fun it is feeding him and watching his expressions. Side note: eating helps babies to talk better because they are learning to use their tongues. I found this fact very interesting and have noticed Kambryn talking more. 😍
At Kambryn's check up on the 18th, we found out he now weights 17lbs and 9 and a half oz. He was 26 inches and 3 quarters long. He's in the 50th percentile on both and I couldn't be more proud of my big growing baby.
Kambryn can now say Mama, Dada, and Nana. I swear he tried to say "I love you" last night as well. I was snuggling with him and when he looked up at me with such loving eyes, I just melted. I told him softly that I loved him and he said "I love" and then baby babble. My mouth dropped and I couldn't believe he tried to repeat what I said. My baby boy tried to tell me he loves me. Swoon!
Once I place him into the sitting position, he can sit up on his own. He still tends to flop over but if he's concentrating, he does really well with using his muscles to hold his body up. Again, I work with him on this every day and practice makes perfect. I think it also helps to prop him up on the couch or with pillows.
He loves jumping in his Jumperoo. He adores his dad and I have seen their relationship grow so much within the past two months. Everytime his father walks in from work his whole face lights up. He enjoys playing with all of his toys, even if he hasn't figured out how some of them work. He loves to chew on everything and I think I feel a tooth under his gums but it hasn't made it's appearance yet. I keep checking every day!
He thinks when dog's bark that it is the funniest thing in the world. He loves to laugh when mommy nibbles on his toes, fingers, neck, and ribs. Peek-a-boo is his all time favorite game.
He is in size 2 diapers but I think he needs to go up a size. He also has started wearing size 3-6 month clothing and sometimes 6-9 month clothing (depending on how it is made). He can only wear 6-9 month pants because his legs are long. He's wearing size 2 in shoes! Maybe I have a future basketball player on my hands.
I think 6 months has been my favorite months so far. I love how animated he has become and that his personality is starting to shine. He has a silly personality and an adorable loving side to him as well. I love starting something new with him and watching him change each day. He amazes me and makes me so proud. I hope this has helped you fellow moms who are starting their little ones on new foods. Remember, you chose what you feel like is best for your child. If you have any questions, leave me a comment below or send me a message. I am always happy to help a fellow mother. Thank you so much for taking time to read my son's 6 month updates.
Xx
